Our Teachers

The staff members at Sonshine Street have completed their Early Childhood Education courses and are very experienced in the field. They are always expanding their education and take advantage of the many workshops, conferences and course offered to them throughout the year. They have their First-Aid certificates, Food Safe certificates and have had criminal record checks. We often have student teachers from Langley College Working in our centre and these too, have had criminal record checks.

The Early Childhood Education Colleges recognizes Sonshine Street as a quality centre and sends Early Childhood Education students to us for their practicums. We are thrilled to have these students work along side us and feel they enrich our program.tracy teaching

Special Needs

Over the years we have had many children at Sonshine Street requiring extra support. Our facility is wheelchair accessible and we have enjoyed working along side the experts at the Langley Child Development Centre to offer children that require extra support the same opportunities as the other children that come to us. Both adults and children have benefited from these experiences.

Our Goals

One of our main goals is to foster a good self-esteem in each child and we help them to develop confidence to speak in front of the whole group regularly. Our drama and literature emphasis gives many fun opportunities for the children to act out stories. This helps with speech, language and a love of literature and also helps us all learn to be respectful of others regardless of their abilities.

Science is another important part of our program here at Sonshine Street and we regularly enjoy “Science Weeks” when we experiment with messy, bubbly and sometimes loud ingredients!! We learn about insects and reptiles and try to have “hands-on” experiences. We also have included the popular “Fun Family Phonics” program in our 4-year-old classes in order to help the children learn the basics essential for successful reading and to prepare for Kindergarten.

Our preschool is equipped with a wide variety of toys that help develop pre-math skills, fine motor development, hand-eye co-ordination and generally foster inquisitiveness and promote learning. Each day there are opportunities for creativity in a completely unstructured area where children can enjoy a variety of materials according to their own imagination.

We also have opportunities to create in a more structured area where we supply materials and ideas according to the themes we are working on. Throughout the year we work on themes such as, The Five Senses, Transportation, Occupations, Musical Instruments, Reptiles, Insects, Nutrition, Ocean, Farms, Safety, Seasons & Holidays. We are very fortunate to have access to a gym in our building where we can enjoy gross-motor activities on those rainy days.
